What is Confirmation at St. Paul's Lutheran Church?
Confirmation is more than just information based learning, or catechesis as it is called in many liturgical/confessional denominations. Confirmation, in the Lutheran Church, involves learning and understanding what it means to be a Christian, both through the learning of the Six Chief Parts of Christian doctrine, but also in the learning, discussing, and living of the Christian Faith in the Life of the Believer. The Confirmand (learner) is taught, admonished, raised up, and mentored into starting their life long journey of being one of God's people. This process is completed after two years of study and practice but this only provides the foundation of Christian Life, Stewardship, and Living.
By the end of Confirmation, the Confirmand should understand a) the Six Chief Parts of Christian doctrine, b) how to Confess the Christian faith if and when asked by anyone why the have hope in Christ Jesus (1 Peter 3:15), c) be prepared to take part in Holy Communion, and d) have a firm understanding and knowledge of what it means to live out their Christian faith in a sinful and broken world. This foundational instruction, alongside their knowledge of God and His Word, is indispensable to living our Gospel oriented, faith filled, lives devoted to God and neighbor.
At the end of Confirmation, after they have completed their two years of study and mentorship they will received a Confirmation Certificate and begin their Junior and Senior Highschool mentoring program which will pair them with other Christian Adult with whom they will learn and live out their Christian faith.
